Mehndi is the tradition of decorating skin with henna paste, most often on the hands and feet. It is temporary body art, not a tattoo: the paste stains only the surface layer of skin and fades as those cells shed, usually over ten to fourteen days in Bangkok. The word is used across South Asia and the Gulf for both the paste and the occasion it is applied for, particularly weddings. Because it stains rather than pierces, there is no healing period and nothing to care for beyond keeping it dry at first.

How long does mehndi last?

Ten to fourteen days for natural henna, fading gradually rather than washing off. Palms and the backs of hands hold longest because the skin is thickest there. Forearms, ankles and anywhere clothing rubs fade faster, and swimming shortens it noticeably. Keeping the area dry for the first day and avoiding soap directly on the design both extend it. A little oil on the skin before showering helps, while chlorine, exfoliation and hand sanitiser are what fade it fastest.

Can you do henna at my Bangkok hotel?

Mehndi and Henna Hand Art in Bangkok

Short answer: mehndi is body art drawn in henna paste, and in Bangkok you can have it applied in your own hotel room rather than at a market stall. Designs stain reddish brown, deepen for about a day, and fade over one to two weeks.

Designs, and the one safety point

The four design families, and which suits a first time

Most mehndi you will see falls into one of four traditions. Knowing which you want makes the conversation with any artist far shorter.

Indian. The densest style. Fine detail, paisleys, florals and lace-like fills, often covering the palm and running up the forearm. This is the bridal standard and the slowest to apply.
Arabic. Bolder, flowing vines and larger floral shapes with more bare skin left between them. Faster to apply and it reads clearly from a distance, which is why it photographs well.
Gulf or Khaleeji. Loose, painterly florals, often a single large motif rather than full coverage.
Minimal and modern. A single band, a small wrist motif, a line of dots. Ten minutes, and by far the most common choice for a Bangkok holiday keepsake.

If you are unsure, start minimal. A small design tells you how your skin takes the stain before you commit two hours to full hands.

Black henna: the one thing to get right

This matters more than the design. The risk worth knowing about is not the design at all — it is what the paste is made of.

Real henna is never black. Henna is a plant, and it stains orange before deepening to reddish brown over about a day. A cone that produces jet black within half an hour has had something added, usually PPD, a hair dye chemical never intended for skin. On skin it can cause blistering, scarring, and a sensitivity that stays with you for life and affects ordinary hair dye afterwards.

The tell is speed and colour. Natural paste is green-brown, smells of earth and essential oils, needs one to two hours on the skin, and looks orange when it comes off. If an artist anywhere in Bangkok promises black, or promises it fast, that is the moment to walk away. Ask what is in the cone; a good artist answers without hesitating.

The stain

How the stain actually develops

The colour you end up with is decided in the hours after application, not by the artist. Paste goes on wet and is left to dry on the skin for one to two hours. You scrape it off dry rather than washing it, and the mark underneath looks disappointingly pale orange. Over the next twelve to twenty four hours it oxidises to its final reddish brown. Judging the result before then is the single most common mistake.

Making it last

Four things decide how long a henna stain lasts, and three of them happen in the first twelve hours.

Leave the paste on as long as you can. Two hours is the target.
Scrape, never wash. Then keep it away from water for six to eight hours. Sleeping on it is ideal.
Seal it with a lemon and sugar mix or a few drops of eucalyptus oil while the paste is still on.
Skip pools and the sea for a day. If you are heading to the islands, get the henna at the end of the Bangkok leg rather than the start.

Hands and palms hold longest because the skin is thickest. Forearms and ankles fade faster, and anywhere clothing rubs goes first. Bangkok heat actually helps here: warm skin takes a deeper stain than cold skin does.

Where to get mehndi in Bangkok

There are three realistic routes. Market and street stalls, mainly around Khaosan, are cheap and immediate but this is also where almost every reaction story starts. Studio artists take bookings and do good work, but you travel to them and wait. The third option is having the artist come to you, which suits mehndi particularly well, because you have to sit still for one to two hours anyway and doing that in your own room beats doing it on a plastic stool.
