Black henna: why we will not use it
The risk worth knowing about is not the design, it is what the paste is made of. Reactions to black henna are common enough to be worth a warning on a page that sells the real thing.
The short version: real henna is never black. Henna is a plant, Lawsonia inermis, and it stains skin orange at first, deepening to reddish brown over about a day. If a cone produces a jet black design within half an hour, something has been added to it. Usually that something is PPD, a chemical used in hair dye and not intended for direct application to skin.
On skin, PPD can cause severe allergic reactions: blistering, weeping, and scarring that can outlast the design by months. It can also leave a person permanently sensitised, so that ordinary hair dye becomes a problem for the rest of their life. A holiday keepsake is not worth that trade, which is why we will decline the booking rather than apply it.
How to spot it before it goes on
Natural henna and black henna look and behave differently before either touches your skin. The table sets out the tells: colour, smell, development time and cost.

If you are offered henna anywhere in Bangkok and the artist promises black, or promises a finished stain almost immediately, that is the moment to walk away. Ask what is in the cone. A good artist will tell you without hesitating.
Is henna illegal?
Natural henna body art is legal and practised openly, in Bangkok and almost everywhere else. The question comes up because PPD, the chemical in black henna, is restricted or banned for direct skin application in many countries. We use natural henna only, so it is not a question you need to weigh with us.
How much does henna cost in Bangkok?
Google shows people asking about henna prices alongside permanent tattoo prices, which is worth separating: these are different things. A tattoo is permanent, done with needles, and priced by session and artist. Henna sits on the skin surface, fades in a fortnight, and is priced by the design.
- Design size and detail. A small wrist or ankle motif takes minutes. Full bridal hands and feet take hours.
- How many people. Group and bridal-party bookings are arranged as one longer session.
- Hand art or hair colour. Different processes and different timings, so different prices.

How long henna lasts, and what changes it
Ten to fourteen days is normal for natural henna, fading gradually rather than coming off at once. What varies it is mostly where it sits and what happens to it afterwards.
- Where on the body. Palms and the backs of hands hold longest because the skin is thickest and stains deepest. Forearms, ankles and shoulders fade noticeably faster.
- Friction. Anywhere clothing rubs, or where you wash frequently, will go first.
- Water. Swimming pools and the sea shorten a design more than anything else. If you are heading to the islands, get the henna at the end of the trip rather than the start.
- Heat. Warm skin develops a darker stain, which is one of the few ways Bangkok’s climate helps rather than hinders.

Hand art or hair and beard colour
Both use the same plant, but the application, timing and aftercare are completely different.

Design styles you can ask for
Say the style rather than the occasion and you will get closer to what you pictured. Arabic is bold, flowing and leaves skin between the lines, so it reads well from a distance and goes on fastest. Indian is dense and fine, covering more of the hand, and takes longest. Moroccan is geometric. Minimal is a single motif or a band on the wrist or ankle, and is what most travellers actually want.
Bring a photo. A picture communicates a style in seconds where a description takes ten minutes and still leaves both of you guessing.
During the appointment you sit still with your hand supported, and the paste needs to stay untouched while it dries — around twenty to thirty minutes before it stops smudging. Plan for that: it is not a treatment you can do with a phone in the other hand.
Aftercare: the first twelve hours
How dark the design ends up is decided almost entirely in the hours right after application, not by the artist.
- Leave the paste on as long as you can bear. Two hours is the target. The longer it sits, the deeper the stain.
- Scrape it off dry, never wash it off. Then keep the area away from water for six to eight hours. Sleeping on it is ideal.
- Seal it. A lemon and sugar mix, or a few drops of eucalyptus oil, keeps the paste moist while it works and helps the dye oxidise deeper.
- Avoid water activities for the first day. Pools, sea and long hot showers all fade it fast.
Do this and ten to fourteen days is realistic. Moisturising afterwards helps; soap, sun and scrubbing do not.
Bridal and event henna
Bridal work is a different kind of booking. Detailed hands and feet take two to four hours each, sometimes spread across two days for full coverage.
- Book at least two weeks ahead, more in wedding season. We block a long slot and plan the design rather than improvising.
- Take a trial. A smaller test design two to three weeks before settles style and density while there is still time to change it.
- On the day we come to your hotel, condo or venue. The paste needs two hours or more to set, so build that into the schedule rather than squeezing it.
- Groups. For bridesmaids and family we can work two to three pairs of hands in parallel if timing is tight. Tell us numbers early.
Is It Culturally Insensitive to Get Henna?
It is a fair question and it has a straightforward answer: henna body art is a living tradition across South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, worn at weddings and festivals and also on any ordinary day, and it is worn by visitors and residents alike in all of those places. It is not a closed practice.
Where people do raise an objection online, it is usually about a specific design being lifted out of the ceremony it belongs to and used as decoration — a bridal mehndi pattern worn as a festival accessory, for instance. The practical way through that is the same as anywhere else:
- Ask what a design is for before choosing it, especially the bridal patterns.
- Have it applied by someone who does this work properly, rather than at a stall that treats it as a souvenir.
- Wear it as what it is — a temporary stain that fades in one to three weeks.
Henna Brows: A Tint That Stains the Skin Too
Henna brow tint colours the hair and stains the skin underneath it, which is the difference between it and a standard brow tint. On the hair the colour lasts as long as a tint does; on the skin it fades over days, and while it is there it fills the gaps in a sparse brow without makeup.
You can book both in one visit if you have the time, though most people choose one. Often paired with eyebrow threading at home before an event.
- Against a standard tint — a tint colours the hair only, so a gap stays a gap. Henna fills it for a few days.
- Against threading or waxing — those change the shape. This changes the colour and the apparent density. People often book both.
- Patch test — always, on a first visit, and never with black henna. See the black henna section above for why that matters here more than anywhere.

What is the average cost of a henna tattoo in Bangkok?
Henna is priced by design size and the time it takes, not per session, so a small wrist motif and full bridal hands are very different bookings. An intricate small design can take longer than a simple large one, so send a picture even if you are not sure it is exactly what you want.
How long does a henna tattoo last?
Natural henna usually lasts ten to fourteen days, fading gradually rather than washing off. Hands and palms hold longest because the skin is thickest there. Is your henna natural?

That is why judging the colour immediately is the most common reason people think it has gone wrong. Leave the paste on as long as you comfortably can and let it flake off rather than washing it away, because both make a visible difference to the final depth.
Why will you not use black henna?
Because it is not henna. Natural henna stains reddish brown and never black, so a black result means a chemical has been added, usually PPD. On skin that can cause blistering, scarring and a permanent sensitivity. We would rather lose the booking than apply it. The reaction is not always immediate either, which is what makes it dangerous: people associate the blistering with something else days later. If you are offered black henna anywhere, the honest advice is to walk away rather than negotiate about it.
Does henna damage your skin or hair?
Natural henna does neither. On skin it sits on the surface and stains the top layer, then fades as those cells shed. On hair it coats the strand rather than stripping it, which is why it covers grey with a warm tone instead of the flat block a synthetic dye gives. That coating also adds a little body to fine hair, which some people like and others find changes their styling. It is not reversible in the way a synthetic colour is, so if you are unsure, a strand test on a hidden section is worth doing first.
How far ahead should I book bridal henna?
At least two weeks for bridal or event work, and earlier in wedding season. Detailed hands and feet take two to four hours each and we block a long slot. A smaller trial design two to three weeks before lets us agree style and density in advance. Timing the real application matters as much as booking it: two to three days before the event is the sweet spot, because the colour reaches its deepest at around forty-eight hours. Applying it the day before means wearing it at its lightest on the day it matters.
