Waxing Aftercare: Avoid Bumps & Irritation

Waxing Aftercare: Avoid Bumps & Irritation

Short answer: for the first 24 hours, keep skin cool and clean, avoid friction and heat, then exfoliate lightly after a few days.

The recovery timeline

First 24 hours

One boundary matters before anything here applies: aftercare is for normally irritated skin. If the area blistered, lifted or looks raw, that is a burn, not irritation — waxing burns and when to worry covers it, and it comes first.

  • Skip hot showers, saunas and pools.
  • No gym for the first day.
  • Avoid tight clothing over the area.
  • Keep it cool and dry — Bangkok heat means sweat irritates fresh skin.

Days 2–7

  • Exfoliate gently from day two or three, which is what prevents ingrown hairs.
  • Moisturise daily.
  • Avoid heavy sun on freshly waxed skin.

Keep it smooth

Keeping skin smooth between appointments comes down to the four habits below, started from day three.

  • Wax every 3–4 weeks. Regrowth gets finer over time.
  • Book the next one before the hair fully returns — each visit stays shorter.
  • Leave the razor alone in between, which is what keeps the cycle in step.

Book your next mobile wax whenever suits.

Booking around a trip changes the timing: waxing before a beach trip works backwards from the day you want to be smooth.

This page is about the days after. For the days before, how to prepare for waxing covers hair length, skin prep and what to skip on the day.

The realistic timeline — what to expect hour by hour

The first 24 hours after waxing set the tone for the next 3–7 days. Here’s how it usually goes:

WhenWhat you should seeWhat to do
Hour 0–6Mild redness and warmth, like a mild sunburnDon’t touch — hands carry bacteria
Hour 6–12Redness mostly settled, skin feels tightLoose cotton only
Day 1Small bumps as hair regrows under the surfaceDon’t pick
Day 2–3SettlingGentle exfoliation; loose cotton on inner thigh and underarm
Day 4–7Back to normalMost book the next session around week 4–5

Getting it right

Bangkok-specific additions

Bangkok’s heat, humidity, and air-conditioned rooms combine into a perfect storm for post-wax irritation. Beyond the basic 24-hour rules above:

  • Skip the pool for 48 hours, not 24. Chlorinated pools on freshly waxed skin in Bangkok heat = guaranteed rash. The sea is gentler but still wait at least 24 hours.
  • Air-conditioned rooms dehydrate skin. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser in the evening — Bangkok hotels run AC aggressively and the skin loses moisture fast.
  • Sun exposure. SPF 30+ on freshly waxed skin, especially the face, neck, and shoulders. Bangkok UV is intense year-round.
  • Massage and spa — wait 48 hours. Oils and friction from a massage on freshly waxed skin can cause ingrowns.

How to exfoliate without making it worse

Exfoliating is the single most important aftercare habit for preventing ingrown hairs. The wrong way is worse than not exfoliating at all. The right way:

  1. Use a soft washcloth, or a mild chemical exfoliant if your skin already tolerates one.
  2. Wet the skin with warm water first.
  3. Buff gently rub in small circles for 15–20 seconds. No scrubbing.
  4. Rinse, pat dry, apply fragrance-free moisturiser.

Don’t use harsh scrubs, loofahs, or dry brushing on freshly waxed skin — they create micro-tears that turn into ingrowns. Start on day 3, not day 1.

Common mistakes to avoid

These are the mistakes that turn a good wax into a week of bumps, and all of them happen after the appointment rather than during it.

  • Applying deodorant within 24 hours (aluminium blocks pores).
  • Exfoliating too hard or too soon.
  • Wearing tight synthetic underwear or leggings on freshly waxed intimate areas.
  • Sunbathing or hot tubs within 24 hours.
  • Shaving between waxes (resets the cycle and causes stubble ingrowns).

Aftercare is the same in every district we cover. If you are booking a follow-up, the area pages carry the arrival and access detail — waxing in Silom, for instance.

Questions

Before you book

When can I exfoliate?

From about day two or three, and gently. Exfoliating lifts the dead skin that traps regrowth under the surface, which is what causes most ingrown hairs. Starting sooner than that irritates follicles that are still settling. A soft cloth or a mild scrub two or three times a week is enough; aggressive scrubbing does more harm than good on skin that has recently been waxed.

Can I go to the pool after?

Wait twenty-four hours before a pool, the sea or a sauna. The follicles stay open for roughly a day after waxing, and chlorine, salt water and heat are all irritants that find their way in. This matters more in Bangkok than a cooler climate because you are sweating regardless. Booking an evening appointment means most of that twenty-four hours passes while you are asleep.

Can I shave between waxes?

Technically yes, but it resets the cycle and costs you most of the benefit. Waxing removes hair from the root so everything regrows on roughly the same schedule, which is what makes the smooth period predictable. Shaving cuts at the surface, so that patch returns within days and out of step with the rest, and blunt regrowth is far more likely to become an ingrown. Stick to the three to four week rhythm.

Will my ingrown hairs go away on their own?

Most clear within 1–2 weeks on their own, especially if you exfoliate gently from about day three. Do not dig at them — that is what scars. Persistent ones respond to a dermatologist's glycolic treatment if needed.
